  • How close do we get to the icebergs? In some places you can paddle right up to the icebergs! You will be able to touch the smaller icebergs and the larger ones will need to avoided due to safety reasons.

  • Does everyone get their own boat to themselves? Yes! Everyone gets their own boat to use. Our boats are portable and inflatable single-person packrafts.

  • Are two person kayaks also available? Yes, we also have double boats available for those who like to paddle together.

  • Do I need kayaking experience to paddle on a glacier lake in Iceland? No! Complete beginners are more than welcome to join the Glacier and Volcano Expeditions kayaking tours and everyone will be given a lesson, tips and instructions on how to use the equipment.

  • Is it easy to paddle on the lake? All of the Glacier and Volcano Expeditions tours are adventure-style experiences that do involve physical effort. These tours are designed for people who are good physical health and who hike/ exercise regularly.

  • How cold is the tour going to be? Paddling on the lake can be cold so you must make sure you are dressed warm. If you wear plenty of layers beneath your drysuit you will be comfortable.

Stable boats for a comfortable glacier lagoon kayaking experience

The safest and most comfortable position when kayaking is sitting in your boat. Glacier and Volcano Expeditions have chosen to use packrafts for their glacier kayaking tours due to the incredible stability due to the specific design of these boats. The design characteristics provide unmatched stability which means that there is an extremely low chance that a tour participant will tip out of their boat and fall into the lake which makes our tours very comfortable and beginner friendly.

Our inflatable boats are very easy to manoeuvre through the small icebergs that are often scattered across the glacier lake and they are also comfortable to sit in. Despite the fact that it is very unlikely that you will tip out of your boat we still ensure that everyones drysuit and life jacket is correctly fastened for a safe adventure.

Incredible glacier
experiences

 Environmental
Sustainability

We love to live beside and work within Vatnajökull National Park and we have taken it upon ourselves to provide the most environmentally-friendly glacier and volcano experiences possible.

Human power

Glacier and Volcano Expeditions are proud to be a human-powered only operation. Once the tour has begun at the roadside meeting location we completely exclude motorised transportation from all of our operations. Walking, hiking, climbing, kayaking and ski touring are the only means of transport that we operate within the Vatnajökull National Park boundary. This eliminates the risk of oil or chemical spill, no plants are squashed beneath tyres, no birds are disturbed by vehicles, no obnoxious noise pollution is created and no greenhouse gasses are produced.

Leave no trace

We lead our tours with a leave no trace policy which means that we do not adapt the landscape or leave any equipment or structures within Vatnajökull National Park. We believe that it is extremely important that the remaining wilderness areas that we have on this earth are taken care of and that modification of these areas is kept to an absolute minimum.

Tree planting

Glacier and Volcano Expeditions have implemented an active tree planting programme on our property to offset greenhouse gas emissions that are created from driving the equipment vehicle between home and the public glacier parking lot. As of June 2025 the Glacier and Volcano Expeditions team has planted approximately 10,000 trees at our Southern Iceland property and we intend to plant approximately 20,000 in total over the next five years.

Avoid the Crowds – Experience Iceland’s Glaciers the Personal Way

Glacier and Volcano Expeditions specialise in providing private and small group tours. All of our tours are led by the very people who own the company and our hands-on, environmentally-conscious approach ensures each guest enjoys a safe, high-quality adventure on Iceland’s most breathtaking ice landscapes. No mass tourism. Just real exploration, personal attention, and expert local knowledge.
